Jean-Noel Abehi and Anselme Seka Yapo, two ex-top army officials were sentenced to 5 and 20 years’ imprisonment respectively by the military court in Abidjan, on Tuesday August 4th. The former was accused of taking actions to destabilize Côte d’Ivoire’s government as he living in exile in the neighboring Ghana, while the latter was accused of killing the driver of a former human rights minister Joel N’Guessan, during the 2010-2011 post-election crisis.

The court convicted Anselme Seka Yapo, a.k.a ‘Seka Seka’ of voluntary homicide and assault and battery. He was also expelled from the gendarmerie and “could not leave the country for 10 years after his release”. Anselme Seka Seka was the former head of security for Simone Gbagbo, ex-first lady.

Simone Gbagbo, the spouse of former President Laurent Gbagbo has been convicted for her “pivotal role in post-election violence” and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. ICC appeals judges have upheld a ruling that the court can prosecute the former first lady, but it is unclear if authorities will hand her over.

Human rights-oriented NGOs and justice critics in the country have accused Ouattara's government of prosecuting Gbagbo supporters while ignoring crimes committed by the president's own backers. They say they are waiting for the court to expand its investigations to all sides involved in the 2010-2011 post-election violence.
