Didier Drogba gave the home side a dream start as he shot them into the lead in the 4th minute after his side was awarded a penalty kick owing to a bad tackle on Roma striker, Gervinho

The Ivoirians soon doubled their lead with Gervinho himself the architect. This time, his shot deflected into the net by a Burkina Faso defender and thus Ivory Coast were 2-0 up inside 13 minutes.

The Senegalese settled into the game afterwards and made sure the game ended 2-0 in the first half.
With a changed game plan coming into the second half, the Elephants started brightly like they did in the first half as Lille of France forward, Salomon Kalou, increased the goal tally to 3-0 with just five minutes after resumption of play.

While Ivory Coast pressed further to increase the tally in order to make the second leg more of a formality, the Burkinabe also struggled to reduce the deficit and were rewarded with their last kick as Papis Cisse scored a vital away goal to end it 3-1 at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.

Cote d'Ivoire won the match 3-1.
